Stanford Falls at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 25 Stanford came up short in a 28-12 loss at No. 5 Arizona State, Friday, at Desert Financial Arena.

The Cardinal (8-2, 1-1 Pac-12) won three of the 10 bouts against the Sun Devils (10-1, 2-0 Pac-12).

Redshirt freshman Shane Griffith, ranked seventh nationally at 165 pounds, knocked off sixth-ranked Josh Shields, 5-3, in the second sudden-victory period. Griffith has won 22 matches in a row, tying for the fourth-longest winning streak in program history.

Senior Gabriel Townsell, who hasn't wrestled since Jan. 1 at the Southern Scuffle, moved up to 133 pounds and registered a fall in 7:38 over Josh Kramer. Townsell used a step-around lateral drop to throw Kramer in sudden victory to pick up the win.

Redshirt freshman Real Woods closed out the scoring for Stanford with a 14-2 major decision over Navonte Demison at 141 pounds. Woods, who is third nationally, moves to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in duals.

Stanford returns to The Farm next week for a pair of Pac-12 duals against CSU Bakersfield and Oregon State.
