Arizona State Meet Canceled

Stanford's February 20 women's gymnastics meet against Arizona State has been canceled, it was announced on Friday.

The Cardinal, which had previously canceled a February 15 home meet against Utah, made the decision to cancel both meets to ensure that the Cardinal gymnasts have adequate training time to prepare to compete safely at the highest level.

The women's gymnastics program initially reported back to campus on January 4 to begin the onboarding process for the upcoming varsity season. Following a mandatory 10-day quarantine, the Cardinal conducted modified outdoor training activities with limited equipment, which complied with restrictions effective at the time, starting on January 14.

Santa Clara County's return to the Purple Tier of the State's Blueprint for a Safer Economy on Monday, January 25 coincided with an update to the County's Mandatory Directive for Collegiate and Professional Sports. That update allowed collegiate sports, including indoor competition, to resume in Santa Clara County.

Training for the first time on all four events upon returning to the gym on Wednesday, January 27, the Cardinal has ramped up its training with sights set on returning to competition as soon as safely possible.

"We are thrilled to be back in our home facility and are grateful for the opportunity to train in-doors," fourth-year head coach Tabitha Yim said. "Right now we are focused on ramping up our strength and numbers across all four events as a team. We will continue to prioritize the health and well-being of our student-athletes and will do everything we can to provide them with an opportunity to represent Stanford at the highest level both on and off the competition floor."

While Stanford Athletics will continue striving to create an opportunity for student-athletes to compete in their upcoming season, all decisions regarding training and competition will be based on the conditions and the guidance provided to us by public health officials and our university administration.
