CORVALLIS, Ore. – Stanford closed out the regular season, Sunday, defeating host Oregon State, 19-16, before falling to Utah Valley, 19-16, at Gill Coliseum.
The Cardinal (5-3) finished undefeated in Pac-12 Conference duals at 4-0 and won its fourth straight dual against the Beavers. Oregon State dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-12, while Utah Valley moved to 2-2.
Trailing 16-13 going into the final bout against the Beavers, who lost a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct, fifth-year senior Nathan Traxler recorded a first period fall over Brian Barnes at heavyweight to seal the win for the Cardinal. It was the first fall of the season for Traxler, who improved to 4-1 on the season at 285 pounds.
Redshirt sophomore Tyler Eischens also registered bonus points against Oregon State, turning in a 9-1 major decision over Colton Beisley at 174 pounds.
Redshirt sophomore Shane Griffith, ranked third nationally, wrestled in his first matches of the season at 165 pounds on Sunday. He posted a 9-2 decision over Matthew Olguin in the dual against the Beavers. He also tallied major decision wins over Oregon State's Tommy Strassenburg and Aaron Olmos in extra matches.
Sophomore Jackson DiSario and redshirt freshman Jaden Abas both posted wins by decisions in the dual against the Beavers. Both DiSario (125 pounds) and Abas, who is ranked 14th nationally at 149 pounds, improved to 6-1 with the wins.
Griffith and Traxler also earned wins against Utah Valley. Griffith recorded a 14-3 major decision over Koy Wilkinson, while Traxler closed out the dual with a 6-3 decision against Chase Trussell. Dating back to last season, Griffith has now won 33 consecutive matches - the second longest winning streak in program history. Traxler is now 5-1 overall and has 74 career wins.
Sophomore Luciano Arroyo (141), fifth-year senior Jared Hill (184) and true freshman Nick Stemmet (197) all earned wins by decision versus Utah Valley.
The Cardinal also won nine of its 17 extra matches wrestled on Sunday.
Stanford wraps-up its 15-day road trip on Sunday Feb. 7 at Oregon State. The Cardinal faces the Beavers at 6 p.m. followed by a dual against Utah Valley in Corvallis.
