STANFORD, Calif. – It only took 33 seconds for No. 17 Stanford to take the lead over California en route to a 21-4 victory, Friday, at Stanford Stadium.
Stanford improved to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in the Pac-12 Conference, while the Golden Bears dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the Pac-12.
Stanford's 21 goals were a season-high and the most it had scored since March 17, 2018 – a 21-5 win over Cal.
Nine difference Cardinal scored in the game, led by freshman Ailish Kelly's five goals on five shots. Senior Ali Baiocco and sophomore Jay Browne each registered eight points to lead the team. Baiocco turned in a hat trick to go with five assists, while Browne scored twice and assisted on six others.
Browne's six assists tied a single-game school record with Kelsey Murray (vs. Colorado, April 13, 2018). She now has seven goals and 14 assists on the season.
Sixth-year Genesis Lucero won 11 draw controls for the Cardinal, tying for the second-most in a single game in program history. She also had four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Fifth-year senior Mikaela Watson and senior Galen Lew each tallied a hat trick for Stanford as well. Lew also assisted on two others and now has 12 goals and 10 assists on the season. Watson's season goal total is nine.
In total, 30 Cardinal played in the game against the Bears. Eight players made their season debuts, including freshmen Emma Capanna, Sarah Looney, Katie McMahon and Sophia McMahon. Katie McMahon scored Stanford's final goal on an assist by Sophia McMahon.
Also scoring for the Cardinal were senior Katherine Gjertsen, twice, fifth-year senior Jacie Lemos and sophomore Anna Griffith. Ffith-year senior Daniella McMahon tallied two assists for Stanford, while freshman Katy Gilbert set up Kelly's final goal at the 12:55 mark in the second half.
Stanford led 16-1 at halftime. Senior goalkeeper Trudie Grattan earned the start and picked up the win, allowing just one goal with two saves. Sophomore Kara Rahaim started the second half in goal before being subbed out for junior Julia Cooper, who notched two saves in her season debut.
Up next, Stanford hits the road to take on Fresno State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Fresno before closing out the week at UC Davis on Sunday, April 4.
