Cardinal Tops Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. – For the second straight game, No. 16 Stanford scored a season-high in goals with a 23-8 victory, Wednesday, at Fresno State.

Stanford remained undefeated on the season and improved to 6-0, while Fresno State dropped to 1-8. The 23 goals were the most by a Cardinal squad since scoring 25 in a win over Cal on April 26, 2015.

Senior Ali Baiocco and sophomore Jay Browne led the team with nine points each. Browne set a school record with seven assists to go with two goals. The Dallas native now has 21 assists on the season.

Baiocco scored a game-high six goals to go with three assists and now has a team-leading 26 goals on the season. She has now scored four or more goals in four of Stanford's six games this season.

Reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, Genesis Lucero, eclipsed her career-high in draw controls for the second time in the past three games, totaling 16 against the Bulldogs. That mark is the second-most in a single game in program history.

Senior Katherine Gjertsen matched her career-high with five goals at Fresno State, including three in the second half. Fifth-year Mikaela Watson, senior Galen Lew and freshman Ailish Kelly all registered two goals for Stanford.

Rounding out the scoring for the Cardinal were Katy Gilbert, Anna Griffith, Daniella McMahon and Kyra Pelton with one goal apiece. McMahon converted a free-position shot to put Stanford up 2-0 early in the first half.

Senior Trudie Grattan started in goal and earned the win, collecting a season-high nine saves in the first half. Sophomore Kara Rahaim took over in the second half and recorded a pair of saves while allowing just three goals.

Fresno State was led by Hennessey Evans's three goals, while Sydney Skalstad chipped in with two.

Stanford remains on the road this weekend for another nonconference game, traveling to UC Davis on Sunday at 1 p.m.
