EUGENE, Ore. – Stanford picked up four more victories at the Oregon Relays on Sunday, giving the Cardinal nine over the two-day meet at Hayward Field.
Of the 13 Cardinal competing Sunday, five set season bests. Of those, Ellie Deligianni may have helped herself the most by possibly nudging her way into the top 32 in the West, at least for now. The top 32 in each event after the conference championships weekend advance to the NCAA West Prelims, the qualifying meet for the NCAA Championships.
In a race televised on NBC as part of the USATF Grand Prix portion of the meet, Deligianni, the freshman from Greece, placed fourth in the 800 meters and was the second collegian. She dipped under 2:07 for the first time at Stanford, running 2:06.97. Deligianni stayed in the back of the pack on the first lap and moved into lane two on the penultimate curve to pass several runners. She was third coming off the final turn before dropping a place down the stretch. Teammate Kaitlin Ryan was eighth in the race in a season best of 2:09.23.
If Deligianni breaks into the top 32, it may not last long. She'll likely have to improve upon that time at the Pac-12 Championships to advance.
Stanford's other winners were Keyshawn King in the men's triple jump (51-1, 15.57m), Aria Small (40-11, 12.47m) in the women's triple jump, and Miles Smith (1:51.66) in the non-invitational section of the 800.
King is undefeated in the triple jump this outdoor season, winning all four competitions – the Hornet Invitational, Stanford Invitational, West Coast Classic, and Oregon Relays. He has reached at least 51 feet in each of them, the best stretch of his jumping career.
Rossum finished with a sweep of the short sprints, having won the 200 on Friday night. They were her first collegiate victories for the redshirt freshman.
Like Deligianni and Ryan, Brandon McGorty also appeared during the NBC-TV window and set a season best in the collegiate/open invitational 800, placing fourth in 1:52.49.
In the men's 400, Gabriel Navarro and Miles Zoltak placed second and third, running season bests of 47.51 and 47.71, respectively.
Stanford next competes in the Big Meet dual against Cal, on May 1 in Berkeley. This will be the 125th meeting between the programs in a series that began in 1893. This will be Stanford's final competition before the postseason.
