STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Naomi Girma and junior Maya Doms each contributed a second-half goal as No. 7 Stanford (8-3-0, 2-1-0 Pac-12) handed Oregon (6-1-4, 1-1-1 Pac-12) a 2-1 loss for its first setback of the season on Sunday from Cagan Stadium.
The match was scoreless at halftime, but Stanford came out strong in the second stanza. Girma netted the first goal of the match, and her second of the season, in the 50th minute after Oregon was unable to clear a free kick played into the box from Julia Leontini. A header from an Oregon defender sent the ball to Girma who settled it and fired a left-footed shot into the back of the net.
The Cardinal extended the lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute as Doms recorded her seventh goal of the season. Paige Rubinstein sent a ball into the box where Amy Sayer let it run through for Doms on the back side. The native of Davis, Calif. one-timed a shot past Oregon goalkeeper Leah Freeman.
Doms finished the game with a career-high 11 shots while putting four on frame.
Oregon did not go quietly on Sunday, drawing back to within a goal in the 75th minute on a strike from Ally Cook – her sixth of the season. Cook received a pass from Maya Hahn and one-touched it through the Stanford back line to go one-on-one with Katie Meyer. The Duck dribbled toward goal and slid a shot past the slide of Meyer.
As it has now done in nine of the 11 matches this year, Stanford finished with more shots than its opponent – outshooting Oregon 29-4 on the afternoon, including a 20-2 edge in the second half. The Cardinal also managed nine corner kicks compared to three for the Ducks.
Meyer was forced into just one save over the 90 minutes in goal for the Cardinal while Freeman made eight saves.
Sunday's match was the first of two "pink games" promoting breast cancer awareness. The Cardinal will be auctioning off game-worn pink jerseys through October 21 with proceeds benefiting the Women's Cancer Center at Stanford Medicine. Bids can be placed at gostanford.com/auctions.
Having wrapped up a six-match home stand, Stanford will now hit the road to play Washington State and Washington in Pac-12 play on Thursday and Sunday of next week, respectively.
