STANFORD, Calif. – No. 20 Stanford celebrated Senior Night with a 25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 25-22 win over No. 21 Washington State, Saturday, at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford (14-10, 9-7 Pac-12) swept the season series against Washington State (17-9, 11-5 Pac-12), holding the Cougars to a .145 attack percentage. The Cardinal improves to 66-4 all-time against Washington State.
Before being able to celebrate its two seniors, Holly Campbell and Mackenzie Fidelak, the Cardinal found itself in yet another predicament.
Freshman setter Kami Miner left the match in the middle of the second set with an injury. However, because backup setter Malia Tufuga had already subbed in uring the set to serve for Campbell, the Cardinal had to replace Miner with freshman Maiya Tillman - its lone remaing available player on the bench. Tufuga reentered the match for Campbell and set for the remainder of the second.
With the match even at 1-1, the Cardinal started the third set with Tufuga at setter and Campbell back on the court. Campbell finished her final match in Maples Pavilion with four kills and four blocks.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Caitie Baird had a match-high 17 kills to go with 11 digs for her team-best eighth double-double of the year. Opposite Kendall Kipp registered 14 kills, seven digs and five blocks, while freshman outside hitter Sami Francis added 13 kills, five blocks and two digs.
Redshirt sophomore McKenna Vicini had another dominating performance at the net, finishing with a match-best eight blocks. The Lexington, Kentucky, native also posted four kills on .400 hitting, four digs and an ace.
Miner tallied 15 assists, two digs and a pair of kills before leaving the match. Tufuga finished one dig shy of a double-double with 26 assists and nine digs.
Sophomore libero Elena Oglivie racked up a match-high 24 digs and had eight assists for Stanford. Freshman defensive specialist Taylor Beaven chipped in with 10 digs and an assist, while Tillman had three digs and her first career block.
Washington State was without starting outside hitter Pia Timmer. Sophomore Argentina Ung started in her place, leading the team with 15 kills and 15 digs. Fifth-year senior Penny Tusa added 10 kills on .346 hitting and 12 digs. Tusa also recorded three aces, setting a Washington State career record with 145.
Stanford hits the road next week, traveling to Colorado on Thursday and No. 16 Utah on Sunday.
