STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford earned four major cross country honors from the Pac-12 Conference, winning both Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year distinctions.
J.J. Clark and Ricardo Santos earned Women's and Men's Coach of the Year honors, respectively, after guiding Cardinal teams to Pac-12 titles on March 5 in University Place, Washington.
Charles Hicks and Zofia Dudek was each named Freshman of Year for being the top freshmen finishers at the Pac-12 meet. Hicks, a redshirt freshman, was second in the men's race and Dudek, a true freshman, was third in the women's.
The Women's Coach of the Year honor was the second consecutive for Clark, the Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field. Clark, in his second year, has led the Cardinal to back-to-back conference titles.
For the second consecutive year, the Cardinal women had all five of its scorers finish inside the top 14 at the Pac-12 Championships. It marks the 14th all-time women's Coach of the Year honor for the Stanford program. Clark also guided the Cardinal to a second consecutive podium finish at the NCAA Championships with a Pac-12-leading third-place finish.
Santos, in his second year, guided Stanford to the men's title at the Pac-12 Championships - the Cardinal's third in four years and 15th all-time, one shy of Oregon's record total of 16. The Cardinal's victorious 28 points were the fewest since Colorado's 28 in 2013, with three freshmen among Stanford's five scorers. Santos also led the Stanford men to a Pac-12-best fifth place at the NCAA Championships.
Hicks was the best freshman finisher at the Pac-12 Championships since Oregon's Edward Cheserek won the first of his four individual titles in 2013. Hicks is the fifth Cardinal to collect men's Freshman/Newcomer of the Year along with Thomas Ratcliffe (2016), Miles Unterreiner (2009), Neil Davis (2002) and Donald Sage (2000). He also was the top Pac-12 finisher at the NCAA Championships, crossing in 14th place to help the Cardinal to a fifth-place showing.
Dudek is the eighth Stanford woman to earn Freshman of the Year honors and the first since Elise Cranny in 2014. Her third-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships is the best for a freshman since Cranny's runner-up showing in 2014.
