Happy Flight

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Stanford softball closed out its opening weekend of the 2022 season with a 5-0 victory over Cal Poly, Sunday at the SDSU Softball Stadium.

The Cardinal (4-1) used timely hitting to manufacture runs while Alana Vawter pitched a four-hit shutout to close out the weekend.

Emily Young went 3-for-4 with a double and triple against the Mustangs (0-4) while five different players scored runs for the Cardinal.

Stanford manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the scoreless deadlock. Chloe Doyle singled into center field, and Stanford put a pair of runners in scoring position on a hit batter and wild pitch.

Kaitlyn Lim stepped into the batter's box and got her sixth pitch to drop in shallow right field. Lim was thrown out pushing the ball to second, but the single pushed two Ellee Eck and Sydney Steele across the plate for the 2-0 lead.

The Cardinal added runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Aly Kaneshiro drew a walk, and Young stole third on the ball. When the throw from the catcher went wide, Young was able to jog safely into home for a 3-0 lead. A RBI single from Emily Schultz pushed Kaneshiro across the plate.

Young triples to right center to bat Sydnee Huff across the plate for the final run in the sixth inning.

Vawter pitched a four-hit shutout, allowing zero walks. The junior played to her defense, with only one out being a strikeout on the game.

The Cardinal returns home for the next 11 games – hosting the Stanford Invitational and DeMarini Classic.
