Stumble in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, Ore. - After three rotations scoring a 49.000-or-better, struggles on beam hit the No.19 Cardinal Friday and caused Stanford to fall in its dual meet at Oregon State 197.225-195.050.

In her first taste of collegiate all-around competition, freshman Anapaula Gutierrez totaled a score of 39.250. Her efforts Friday night were led by a second-place overall finish on vault with a score of 9.875 as well as scores of 9.800 on beam and floor.

Stanford's ability to slot in multiple gymnasts in competition lineups was highlighted in a meet where the Cardinal were without super senior Kyla Bryant (due to a loss in her family). Starting on bars, the Cardinal scored a 49.125 led by senior Taylor Lawson's 9.875 routine in the second spot.  Three 9.825 performances from seniors Grace Waguespack and Madi Brunette alongside junior Chloe Widner rounded out the Cardinal's scoring efforts. Widner's routine was her first in competition during the 2022 season and matched her collegiate-best score.

In a rotation where Stanford could not risk any mistakes, the lineup of junior Jade Chrobok, Gutierrez, Neault, Brunette and sophomore Amanda Zeng shined with a team total of 49.000. The team's performance marked just the second time this season that the Cardinal broke the 49.000 barrier on the event. Chrobok marked a new career-best with a 9.775 and freshmen Gutierrez and Neault each scored above a 9.800 on the apparatus for the second consecutive meet.

It was then onto floor where Stanford earned its highest team total of the day, scoring a 49.275. Senior specialist Morgan Hoang once again shined on the event, earning her third 9.90-or-better score of the year with a 9.90 performance. In the anchor position, Lawson also earned a 9.90, her third 9.90+ score on the event in her last four outings. Gutierrez, Brunette and sophomore Addie Stonecipher rounded out the Cardinal's scoring efforts with marks of 9.800, 9.850, and 9.825, respectively.

The beam rotation started strong with scores of 9.850 and 9.825 from senior Wesley Stephenson and Lawson, but three consecutive falls doomed the Cardinal to a 47.625 team score. Gutierrez marked her third 9.80+ score of the day in the anchor spot of the rotation.

After three meets in seven days, the Cardinal have a week between competitions as Stanford next hosts Arizona State in Maples Friday, March 4. The meet is designated as senior night to honor the final appearances of Hoang, Brunette, Waguespack, Stephenson, senior Eve Micco, and student assistant coach Micaela Dugan on The Farm.
