GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Stanford's NCAA Tournament run concluded in the first round after a 20-8 defeat to no. 17 Jacksonville despite two NCAA season records from Ashley Humphrey. The 2022 season comes to a close with an overall record of 12-7.
Jacksonville will face no. 7 Florida in the second round of the tournament on Sunday.
Humphrey needed three assists to set a new NCAA record for assists in a season and she got four on the day to push her total to 88. She ended with a 4.63 assists per game average as well, another NCAA season record.
The previous record of 86 came in 2017 from Stony Brook's Kylie Ohlmiller in 22 games. Ashley needed only 19 to surpass Ohlmiller's total.
The previous assists per game record of 4.27 was from Sarah Allen of Quinnipiac in 2012. She recorded 64 in 15 games, four less than Stanford's redshirt sophomore. Humphrey averaged nearly 0.4 assists more assists per game than Allen to set the new record.
This game marked the Cardinal's 11th NCAA tournament appearance and the ninth time Stanford has fallen in the first round.
Jacksonville's offense recorded eight goals in the first quarter while keeping Stanford scoreless. The Cardinal were able to get on the board with three strikes in the second period, but Jacksonville matched the mark with three of their own.
Early into the second half following an Ailish Kelly goal, a lightning storm caused a nearly two hour delay in the game. Once play resumed, so did the Dolphin's attack.
Stanford tallied five goals in the second half, but was ultimately unable to quell Jacksonville's offense. Ailish Kelly recorded a hat trick to lead all Stanford scorers.
The Dolphins earned the advantage in the draw control, 19-12, and were able to fire more shots as well, 38-17. Kara Rahaim and Olivia Geoghan combined for 12 saves on the day.
Annabel Frist led the Cardinal in draw controls with five, while Galen Lew, Mackenzie Chapman, and Ashley Thurston each chipped in two of their own.
Stanford's season ends with a regular season Pac-12 title, a Pac-12 tournament title, and a fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
