STANFORD, Calif. – A pair of Stanford pitchers were selected on the third and final day of the 2022 MLB Draft, with 2022 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Alex Williams being selected in the 11th round (322nd overall) by the Miami Marlins before the Tampa Bay Rays picked lefty Quinn Mathews with the 584th overall selection in the 19th round.
Including the two on Tuesday, Stanford saw six players drafted in this year's MLB Draft – headlined by Brock Jones being selected 65th overall in the second round by the Rays.
Williams went 8-4 with a 3.20 ERA over 18 starts this season en route to being tabbed first-team All-America by Collegiate Baseball and College Baseball Foundation, second-team All-America by NCBWA and third-team by the ABCA. The Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and All-Pac-12 first-team selection logged 101 1/3 innings, striking out 96 compared to 25 walks. A native of Castro Valley, Calif., Williams went 5-0 in Pac-12 play, sporting a 1.36 ERA over 10 starts and 66 1/3 innings. Particularly impressive over his last eight turns in the regular season, the right-hander went 6-0 with a 0.45 ERA (3 ER in 59 2/3 innings) over that string. In total, Williams managed a quality start in nine of his 18 starts this year while holding opponents to a .229 average against and posting a pair of complete games.
Mathews was named ABCA All-Region second team and an All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection after posting a 9-2 record with a 3.08 ERA and nine saves over 27 appearances (nine starts). The native of Aliso Viejo, Calif., who struck out 111 over 99 1/3 innings (10.01 strikeouts per game) while limiting opponents to a .213 average against, began the year as a starter but moved to the bullpen to shore up the back end of games for the Cardinal. Mathews finished second in the Pac-12 in ERA, wins, strikeouts, saves and hits allowed per game (6.98), while his nine saves were eighth-most in Stanford history. Used in a variety of situations, Mathews was the nation's only pitcher with both nine wins and nine saves this year.
With one more selected this year, Stanford has seen 36 players drafted in the first 15 rounds of an MLB Draft since 2011.
