BURLINGTON, Vt. – Playing amidst rainy conditions on Sunday afternoon, Stanford field hockey dropped an overtime bout to Vermont, 1-0, at Moulton Winder Field. The contest was Stanford's fourth overtime contest this season in seven outings.
Kendall Dowd made her first career start between the posts, making three saves across 65 minutes of action. Cara Sambeth led the offense with three shots – all on goal – while Molly Redgrove fired two. Six of Stanford's nine shots forced saves from the Catamounts (6-1), but the home netminder kept the Cardinal off the board.
"We are continuing to choose to trust our process," said head coach Roz Ellis. "0-2 on the road is never easy, and we need this to fuel us for our next week in training. There is a lot of season left to play, we will keep building on our needs and sharpening our strengths."
Stanford had a series of chances in the first half, with a reverse shot from Haley Mossmer forcing a kick save in the second quarter, but the teams remained scoreless at the intermission. The back and forth action continued in the second half, with Stanford having three penalty corner opportunities in the last minute, but the Catamounts made the necessary saves to send the game to overtime.
The extra period lasted 4:31 before a penalty corner goal from Vermont ended it.
Stanford returns to action on Sunday, September 25 at UC Davis. The action begins at 11 a.m.
