SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Opening its three-game week on the road, Stanford field hockey fell to No. 11 Syracuse, 4-0, on Wednesday evening at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
"We came into this game with a high focus of our work rate on our press and our ability to work the ball out of the back. In those two areas we had some of our best hockey," said head coach Roz Ellis. "There is no doubt we need to clean up our discipline on defense and our connection with the ball higher up the pitch. It's now back to work for Friday."
Kendall Dowd made seven saves and Daisy Ford tallied one stop in goal, as Syracuse put 11 shots on the Stanford goal. Rose Winter and Cara Sambeth recorded shots for the Cardinal. Syracuse was the third ranked opponent Stanford faced this season, and the first of two in a row on the East Coast swing.
After a scoreless first frame, Syracuse took advantage of a pair of corners in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead at the break. Sambeth had the best look at goal for the Cardinal in the first half, but her shot was blocked away in front of goal.
Syracuse added a pair of third quarter goals, also off corners, while Winter found space for a reverse shot in the fourth quarter that just missed the goal post to the left side of the cage.
Stanford returns to action on Friday, Oct. 7 at No. 21 UAlbany. The action will be broadcast on AmericaEast.tv.
