KANSAN CITY, Mo. - Stanford was named third in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I rankings on Tuesday. The Cardinal made a massive jump, moving up from previously being unranked in the preseason rankings.
This is Stanford's highest ranking since the September 10, 2019 when the Cardinal were also ranked third in the poll.
Stanford is coming off of two impressive wins against Villanova and SMU to start the season. Against Villanova in the season opener, the Cardinal kept a clean sheet thanks to four saves from Matt Frank and an impressive showing from the defense. Keegan Hughes showed out for Stanford making several key tackles throughout the contest including a perfectly timed sliding stop to prevent an equalizer for the Wildcats.
In the second match of the season, Stanford defeated the SMU Mustangs 3-1 thanks to great goals from Carlo Agostinelli, Fletcher Bank, and Liam Doyle. Freshman Liam Doyle scored a spectular goal to push the Cardinal up 3-0 when he curled a perfect free kick up and over the wall, connecting with the crossbar as his shot entered the goal.
Stanford will look to continue its hot streak this week against UC Davis on Thursday and SJSU on Sunday, both matches at home in Cagan Stadium.
