Make It Two

STANFORD, Calif. - Jenna Flynn scored a season-high four goals and No. 1 Stanford used a second-half surge to defeat No. 4 California on Sunday afternoon to close out the Stanford Invitational.

Stanford (6-0), which defeated California 9-6 in Berkeley one week ago, has won 11 of the last 12 meetings in the rivalry series since 2018.

Flynn continued her recent impressive play, firing off six attempts and converting two penalty shots to lead the Cardinal, which produced enough offensive balance despite leading scorer Aria Fischer's rare scoreless outing.

Christina Hicks, Ryann Neushul, Skyler Jones, Jewel Roemer all added two goals for Stanford, which led only 5-4 at halftime but broke the game open with seven goals in the third period.

Hicks scored at the 4:56 mark of the third quarter to put Stanford in front 7-5, igniting a run of seven consecutive goals that ended with Sophie Wallace finding the net to make it 13-5 with 7:23 remaining.

The Cardinal's defense took care of the rest, repeatedly turning away the Golden Bears in the pivotal third quarter. California converted only eight of its 30 shot attempts overall and was limited to 3-of-12 on the power play.

In addition to five players registering a field block, Maya Avital was outstanding in goal with 10 saves.

Stanford returns to action on Feb. 12, squaring off against host UC Davis (11:50 a.m.) and Pacific (4:30 p.m.) at the Aggie Invite.

Stanford Goals: Jenna Flynn 4, Christina Hicks 2, Skyler Jones 2, Ryann Neushul 2, Jewel Roemer 2, Katie Lyons 1, Sophie Wallace 1.
