STANFORD, Calif. - Three Cardinal have been named All-Americans according to Baseball America, it was announced on Wednesday. Alberto Rios landed on the first team, followed by Quinn Mathews on the second team and Tommy Troy on the third team.
Rios is the first Cardinal to earn a spot on Baseball America's first team since Jack Little in 2018. This year also marks the first that Stanford has had three players on Baseball America's All-America teams in the same season since Ryan Garko (first team), Carlos Quentin (second team) and John Hudgins (third team) were selected in 2003.
Rios, the Pac-12 and NCBWA District 9 Player of the Year, finished the season hitting .384 with 69 runs scored, 24 doubles, a team-best 18 home runs and 73 RBIs. A native of Bellflower, Calif., Rios hit safely in 54 of the 63 games he played this season and compiled 26 multi-hit games and a team-best 18 multi-RBI games – including setting a Stanford record with 11 RBIs vs. CSU Bakersfield on March 5. Rios had previously been named an All-American according to Collegiate Baseball (first team), College Baseball Foundation (second team), ABCA (first team), Perfect Game (first team) and NCBWA (first team).
Mathews, the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, compiled a 10-4 record with a 3.75 ERA over 19 appearances and 18 starts this year. The left-hander struck out 158 batters compared to 40 walks over 124 2/3 innings of work. The native of Aliso Viejo, Calif. lasted five innings in all but two starts this season, including at least seven in 11 of the 18. Mathews also managed 10+ strikeouts in eight starts this year – including striking out a career-best 16 in a must-win super regional game against Texas on June 11. Mathews had previously been named an All-American according to Collegiate Baseball (second team), College Baseball Foundation (first team), ABCA (first team), Perfect Game (first team) and NCBWA (first team).
Troy batted a team-best .394 with 76 runs scored, 17 doubles, four triples and 17 home runs to accompany 58 RBIs during a stellar junior season. Already named an All-American according to the ABCA (second team) and Perfect Game (first team), Troy won the 2023 Pac-12 batting title after hitting .404 (78-for-193) during the regular season and compiled a team-best 34 multi-hit games while hitting safely in 47 of his 58 games played this year.
