LAS VEGAS - Sophomore Nico Provo won the 125-pound title and Stanford finished seventh as a team at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Provo is the first Cardinal to win the CKLV since Joey McKenna claimed the 141-pound title in 2016. Stanford, which was seventh as a team with 85.5 points, finished with six placers overall.
Ranked 20th nationally and the tournament's No. 9 seed, Provo defeated the No. 1, 3, 5 and 8 seeds en route to the title. He dominated Wyoming's Jore Volk, the No. 5 seed ranked 11th nationally, 8-1 to advance to the finals. There, he recorded a 5-1 decision over No. 3 seed and eighth-ranked Brett Ungar of Cornell. The sophomore is now 7-0 on the season.
Also reaching the semifinals for the Cardinal were true freshman Tyler Knox at 133 pounds and sophomore Daniel Cardenas at 157 pounds. Both placed fifth for the tournament. Knox, the only unseeded wrestler in the semifinals, was edged by No. 2 seed and eighth-ranked Evan Frost of Iowa State, 2-1.
Cardenas, the No. 6 seed at 157 pounds, fell to Arizona State's Jacori Teemer, ranked No. 4 and the tournament's No. 2 seed, 14-6, in the semifinals. He came-from-behind to defeat No. 6 Will Lewan of Michigan, the No. 4 seed, 12-10, to place fifth.
Redshirt freshman Hunter Garvin finished sixth at 165 pounds. The No. 13 seed, Garvin opened the day with a 2-1 decision over No. 21 Brevin Cassella of Binghamton.
True freshman Lorenzo Norman and senior Nick Stemmet placed seventh at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively.
Stanford is back in action on Sunday, Dec. 17 at No. 9 Virginia Tech.
