A Record and More in Boston

BOSTON – On a day when his brother set the collegiate 5,000-meter record, Leo Young broke a formidable Stanford freshman record at the John Thomas Terrier Classic indoor track and field meet on Friday night.

Stanford is competing at two Boston meets Friday and Saturday, with the River Hawk Invitational at the Track at New Balance being the other.

On Friday, the 200-meter banked track at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center was the center stage for fast races, with Stanford runners right in the middle of them.

Leo Young, 18, was third in the non-invitational 3,000 section in 7:55.36, breaking a school frosh mark set by Chris Derrick in 2009. In that race, Derrick placed fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 7:56.31, a U.S. under-20 record at the time.

Young now is No. 7 on the U.S. U20 list and should be a contender for a national top-16 spot, which would qualify him for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 8-9 back in Boston.

Minutes later, on the same B.U. track, Young's older brother Nico of Northern Arizona broke the collegiate absolute record in the 5,000 in 12:57.14. The second collegiate runner in that race was Stanford's Ky Robinson, who ran a strong 13:21.99. Robinson has placed second among collegians in the past two 5,000 collegiate indoor record races, having done so on the same track on December 2 to Harvard's Graham Blanks at the Colyear-Danville meet.

A minor shuffling of the collegiate top-10 lists has Robinson at No. 3 indoors and No. 6 on the absolute (indoors and outdoors) performers' lists after his 13:06.42 at Colyear-Danville.

Cole Sprout raced in the next section of the 5,000 and ran 13:30.37 – only five seconds off his indoor best – to place fifth. In Section 2, Stanford sophomore Callum Sherry (14:07.52) and freshman Milo Skapinsky (14:07.79) each ran personal bests.

At the River Hawk meet, reigning Pac-12 champion Alyssa Jones won the long jump in her season debut in that event, jumping 20-7 ¾ (6.29m).

In the shot put, Kaiah Fisher and Brandy Atuatasi threw season bests of 46-10 ¾ (14.29m) and 45-2 ¼ (13.77m), respectively. For Fisher, her distance was not only a personal best, but it moved her into Stanford's all-time top-10 indoor list, at No. 9.
