LOS ANGELES – Building momentum to open the first road trip of conference play, Stanford men's basketball earned a 59-53 victory over UCLA on Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion.
Kanaan Carlyle continued his high-octane season with game highs of 17 points and four assists, including three makes in five attempts from beyond the arc. Andrej Stojakovic chipped in nine points while Maxime Raynaud posted eight points and nine rebounds.
The Cardinal defense forced UCLA into 16 turnovers, holding the Bruins to 32.8 percent from the floor and 23.1 percent from 3-point range. Stanford held UCLA to just 21.4 percent shooting from the floor (6-for-28) in the second half.
The 53 UCLA points were its fewest of the season, and its fewest against Stanford at home since March 3, 1973.
UCLA jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, with Stanford battling the deficit to four at the half, 30-26. Carlyle scored nine points in the opening frame while Michael Jones added seven. Both guards played key roles over an 8-2 run over the half's final five minutes to cut the Bruin lead as low as two points.
Stanford tied the game at 36-36 with 14:32 to play and took its first lead with 12:41 to go on a triple from Stojakovic. The Cardinal would never relinquish the lead, using 5-0 and 7-0 runs to gain an 11-point edge in the closing minutes.
The win is the first for Stanford at UCLA since 2020.
The Cardinal returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 at USC. The 1 p.m. tip will air on Pac-12 Network.
