Card Knocks Off No. 6 Iowa State

Stanford improves to 3-0

AMES, Iowa - No. 20 Stanford went into Hilton Ccoliseum and knocked off No. 6 Iowa State, 23-21, spoiling the Cyclones' season opener.

Despite forfeiting at 125 pounds, Stanford (3-0) scored bonus points in four of its five wins to edge Iowa State (0-1).

Spotting the Cyclones six points to start the dual, the Cardinal went to work erasing the defecit. Redshirt freshman Tyler Knox, ranked No. 23 at 133 pounds, set the tone with a 10-0 major decision over Garrett Grice.

True freshman Aden Valencia made his collegiate debut at 141 pounds on Friday, pinning two-time NCAA qualifier Zach Redding in 5:50 to give the Cardinal the lead.

Up by one, the Cardinal reeled off three straight wins to pull ahead 23-9. True freshman Grigor Cholakyan pinned Kane Naaktgeboren in 5:32 at 157 pounds for his second fall of the season. 

Iowa native Hunter Garvin, ranked No. 7 nationally, earned a10-3 decision over Connor Euton at 165 pounds.

Redshirt freshman Lorenzo Noman, ranked No. 17 at 174 pounds, capped off the scoring for Stanford with a 10-1 major decision over Aiden Riggins. Norman is now 3-0 on the season, scoring bonus points in all three victories.

The Cardinal has a quick turnaround as it faces No. 2 Iowa in Iowa City on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT on Big Ten Network.
