BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 2 Stanford cruised past No. 15 UC Davis 18-8 on Saturday evening in the first of two counting matches to be played at the Cal Cup.

Stanford (3-0, 0-0 MPSF) produced a season-high scoring effort, with Jewel Roemer’s hat trick pacing an attack that featured 10 different scorers.

Jenna Flynn, Maggie Hawkins, Quinn Healy, Avery Montiel, Ryann Neushul and Ella Woodhead all contributed two goals apiece for the Cardinal, which set the tone early with an eight-goal first period.

The Cardinal shot 62 percent overall and converted six of nine power play opportunities while limiting the Aggies to 22 percent shooting.

Christine Carpenter finished with eight saves over three quarters in goal, leading a defense that totaled 15 blocks overall.

After UC Davis crept to within 4-2 at the 4:48 mark of the first period, Stanford ripped off four straight goals to take an 8-2 lead over the first eight minutes.

A penalty shot from Flynn accounted for the only scoring in the second quarter, extending Stanford’s halftime lead to 9-2.

Hawkins scored both of her goals in the final two minutes of the third quarter while Montiel tallied her first two goals of the season in the fourth stanza. Claire Minton scored her first collegiate goal with 2:36 left to play.

Stanford returns to action on Sunday, facing UCLA in an exhibition at 11 a.m. before taking on Long Beach State at 2:30 p.m. in an official match.
