Cardinal Rides Seven-Run Sixth to Comeback Victory

Stanford scored seven runs in the sixth inning to capture another come-from-behind victory

STANFORD, Calif. – Trailing 3-0 headed to the bottom of the sixth, Stanford (7-0) scored seven runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run double from Temo Becerra and a grand slam from Trevor Haskins, to earn a 9-5 come-from-behind victory over Washington (2-5) from Sunken Diamond on Sunday.

The comeback victory is Stanford’s fourth of the season, including its second of the series after erasing a 9-6 deficit in an 11-9 win on Saturday afternoon. The win secures the series victory in a four-game set against Washington that will conclude on Monday.

The bulk of the rally came with two outs as Rintaro Sasaki drew a one-out walk before Washington recorded the second out of the inning one play later. Back-to-back free passes to Jimmy Nati and Brady Reynolds loaded the bases and set the table for Becerra to lace a double into the left field corner to tie the game. Keeping the train moving, Charlie Bates was issued an intentional walk and Tatum Marsh worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch to once again fill the bags. Working ahead in the count at 2-1, Haskins unloaded on an offering from new reliever Josh Emanuels, sending it over the wall in left field for the grand slam – his third home run in as many games against the Huskies.

After allowing a run in the top of the seventh, Stanford would tack on two more runs in the home half of the inning as Becerra shot an RBI-single back up the middle before Bates lofted a sac fly to left field for Stanford’s ninth run of the game.

Becerra finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and four driven in.

The Cardinal bullpen once again excelled on Sunday, combining for six innings of work while allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Trevor Moore, the first reliever used by the Cardinal, struck out three over three innings of work to eventually earn the victory and move to 1-0 on the season. Senior Ty Uber closed things out, punching out a trio of Washington hitters while pitching three innings to earn his second save of the year.

Sophomore starter Joey Volchko showed flashes of brilliance over three innings, ultimately allowing two runs while striking out four and allowing just one hit in a no-decision.

The Cardinal will look to sweep the four-game series on Monday when the two teams meet for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. Freshman Parker Warner is slated to make his second career start for Stanford.
