Stanford to Host WBIT Opener

Cardinal faces Portland at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 20

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford will participate in the postseason as part of the 32-team Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament field, the WBIT selection committee announced Sunday.

The Cardinal will host Portland in a first-round game at Maples Pavilion on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale by visiting tickets.gostanford.com.

First round play in the tournament is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, with second-round games taking place on March 23. Quarterfinals will be held on March 27 with four teams advancing to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind., for the semifinals on Monday, March 31. The WBIT will conclude with the championship game on Wednesday, April 2.

The winner of Stanford/Portland will face the winner of Seton Hall/Quinnipiac on Sunday. If the Cardinal was to advance, it would host a second-round game on Sunday, March 23 at 2 p.m.

Preliminary round WBIT games will be televised on ESPN+, while the semifinals will be on ESPNU, and the finals will be on ESPN2.

Stanford will be participating in a postseason event other than the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

Stanford is 4-0 all-time against Portland. The first meeting came at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane, Wash. on Dec. 7, 1985, 79-52, in what was Tara VanDerveer’s third win as Cardinal head coach. The two schools have renewed the series of late, with Stanford winning at home on Nov. 16, 2021, 77-55, and at the Chiles Center on Nov. 13, 2022, 87-47. Last season, Stanford was 81-51 winners on Dec. 15.
