LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Ryann Neushul’s go-ahead overtime goal completed a hat trick, powering No. 2 Stanford past No. 1 UCLA 11-9 on Sunday afternoon in the final of the MPSF Championship.
Stanford (22-1, 5-1 MPSF) captured its eighth MPSF title and third in the past four seasons after repeating in 2022-23. The Cardinal also won the MPSF championship in 2014, 2006, 2003, 2001 and 2000.
Sweeping its third meeting this season against UCLA, Stanford has likely locked up the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Championship, which gets underway in two weeks. There have been three seasons in which the Cardinal has won both the MPSF and NCAA titles (2014, 2022, 2023).
Jewel Roemer added an insurance goal in the second overtime, scoring easily on a breakaway as the Cardinal was running out the clock.
Neushul, who fired off a game-best nine shots while also contributing three assists, increased her career total to 223 and passed her sister, Kiley Neushul (2012-15), to move into sixth place on the Cardinal’s all-time list.
Christine Carpenter matched a career high with 13 saves in goal, anchoring the Cardinal’s stingy defensive effort.
Stanford led 6-4 at halftime, with goals from Maggie Hawkins and Sophia Sanders breaking a 4-4 tie in the final two minutes.
Kamryn Barone’s goal at the 5:15 mark of the third period extended Stanford’s lead to 8-4 before UCLA continued to chip away.
The Cardinal was ahead 9-7 in the final quarter before the Bruins mounted another comeback to force overtime.
Stanford then took control over the final six minutes, repeatedly turning away UCLA scoring threats while Neushul and Roemer provided timely scores.
Stanford Goals: Ryann Neushul (3), Jenna Flynn (2), Maggie Hawkins (2), Kamryn Barone (1), Quinn Healy (1), Jewel Roemer (1), Sophia Sanders (1).
