A weekly recap of all things Stanford Athletics, featuring top stories and key highlights from the past week.

Willis Wins NCAA Title

Willis Wins NCAA Title

She was fifth with 200 meters to go in the women’s 800 final, but Stanford junior Roisin Willis unleashed a kick that put a talented field to shame at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Hayward Field.

Willis crossed the finish line with a smile and moments later covered her face with both hands as the realization of her accomplishment took hold.

In a race that included second, third, and fourth fastest women in collegiate history, Willis ran faster than all them, and her time of 1:58.13 was an NCAA Championships record, an Atlantic Coast Conference record and a personal best.

The time is the third-fastest in a collegiate race in history, and eighth-fastest among collegians on all dates, including non-collegiate competition.

WGOLF Martin Sampedro wins The 122nd Women's Amateur 6-15-25

Martín Sampedro Wins The Women’s Amateur

Stanford’s Paula Martín Sampedro became the second Cardinal ever to win The Women’s Amateur, defeating Farah O’Keefe of the University of Texas in the final round of match play to win the 122nd running of the most prestigious amateur tournament in women’s golf.

Aline Krauter is the only other Cardinal to have won The Women’s Amateur, doing so in 2020 by defeating Annabell Fuller 1up at West Lancashire. She also becomes the sixth Spanish winner of The Women’s Amateur, the first since Azahara Munoz in 2009.

By virtue of her win, Martín Sampedro now gains entry to the AIG Women’s Open, US Women’s Open, The Amundi Evian Championship, Chevron Championship, and, by tradition, an invitation to compete at Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship.

Jones Second in NCAA Long Jump

Jones Second in NCAA Long Jump

In the end, Stanford junior Alyssa Jones was two centimeters from her first NCAA title.

Jones led the women’s long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships through five rounds on Thursday at Hayward Field, only to be overtaken in the final round by those two centimeters.

Jones placed second at 21-11 ¾ (6.70 meters), keeping alive her streak of top-four long-jump finishes in every NCAA indoor or outdoor championship meet of her collegiate career -- six in all.

2025 Women's Rowing Staff at NCAAs Web

Byrnes and Staff Named CRCA Division I Staff of the Year

Farwell Director of Women’s Rowing Derek Byrnes and his staff have been named the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association’s (CRCA) Division I Staff of the Year, the association announced Friday morning. Byrnes' staff, this year made up of Alben Family Associate Head Coach Molly Hamrick, assistant coaches Antonella KuglerMolly Milligan, and Maegan Neihart, and director of operations Emily Sprigings, were honored for the second time in the last three seasons.

The Cardinal capped the 2025 season by winning its third NCAA team title, powered by Grand Final victories in the second varsity eight and varsity four. Stanford also claimed its fourth straight conference team title and its first as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, sweeping all races at the championship regatta for the first time since 2021.

Stanford’s rowers were also lauded on the national stage, placing five student-athletes on the CRCA’s First-Team All-America squad for the fourth time in program history. In addition, senior Iris Klok was named a finalist for the coaching association’s Athlete of the Year award.

Stanford Men Conclude NCAA's

Stanford freshman Xavier Drumgoole placed 21st in the triple jump Friday in his first NCAA championship meet.

Drumgoole, however, left disappointed because he didn’t record a true jump among his three attempts at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.

Coming in with the fourth-best season mark in the field after his 53-10 ½ (16.42 meters) performance at the NCAA West Prelims, Drumgoole was forced to bail out of his first jump, though it was recorded as 42-10 ¼ (13.06) and fouled on his next two, ending his meet.

SAB Award Winners

Student-Athletes honored at Annual SAB Awards

The annual Stanford Athletic Board Awards were held at Bing Auditorium, highlighting the Cardinal's excellence during the 2024-25 season. Ryann Neushul (women's water polo) earned the Al Masters Award as the highest-achieving student-athlete.

This year, 27 varsity programs were represented during the ceremony while 53 student-athletes walked away with awards.

During the 2024-25 campaign, Stanford has won two NCAA championships (women's rowing and women's water polo) and six total national championships (sailing (3x) and artistic swimming). The Cardinal has tallied at least one NCAA championship during each of the last 49 years, dating back to the 1976-77 campaign. In total, Stanford varsity teams have won 138 NCAA championships (71 men, 67 women) and 173 national titles overall.
