STANFORD, Calif. – In its second season under Chris Ayres, The Matt Gentry Head Wrestling Coach, Stanford produced a pair of All-Americans and turned in another top 20 finish at the NCAA Championships.
Stanford was 10-5 overall and 2-4 in ACC duals despite not wrestling a 125-pounder all season. The Cardinal finished fifth at its first ACC Championships in Durham, North Carolina.
Stanford qualified eight wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia. Earning automatic berths were Jason Miranda (141), Hunter Garvin (165), Nick Stemmet (197) and Peter Ming (285). Tyler Knox (133), Jaden Abas (149), Grigor Cholakyan (157) and Lorenzo Norman (174) received at-large bids to the national tournament.
The No. 7 seed, Garvin reached the quarterfinals at the NCAA Championships, placing sixth at 165 pounds for a second consecutive season. Stanford’s first individual ACC champion, Garvin became the seventh multiple-time NCAA All-American in program history. He completed his redshirt sophomore campaign with a 23-9 overall record and a 10-2 mark in duals.
Knox went from the No. 13 seed to an eighth-place finish at 133 pounds. He battled his way back through the consolation bracket to become just the fourth freshman NCAA All-American in program history, joining Joey McKenna (2016), Abas (2021) and Garvin (2024). The redshirt freshman is the 27th individual All-American in school history as the Cardinal now boasts 39 All-America honors overall.
Stanford was 18th as a team in Philadelphia and had multiple All-Americans in back-to-back seasons. It is the fifth time in the past six years Stanford has produced multiple All-Americans in the same season, and the 11th time overall.
Earning All-ACC honors for Stanford were Garvin (165) and Stemmet (197). Three Cardinal picked up ACC Wrestler of the Week awards during the season – Norman (Jan. 1), EJ Parco (Jan. 21) and Knox (Feb. 18).
For the first time in program history, Stanford won the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships team title, claiming three individual crowns. Knox (133), Abas (149) and Norman (174) were the first Stanford individuals to win a Midlands title since Ryan Mango in 2012. Knox was voted the Dan Gable Most Outstanding Wrestler, while Norman took home the Jack Leese Champion of Champions award. They are the second Cardinal to win their respective honors, joining Matt Gentry who won both in 2004.
Team awards were unveiled at the Cardinal’s annual banquet in April, and Garvin took home the Vern Jones Most Outstanding Wrestler award, while Knox secured the Newcomer Award.
Stemmet was presented with the BAGUBA Award, given to the individual who best exemplifies what the coaches look for in a Stanford wrestler and how he represents the program. The fifth year ended his career with a 101-48 record, moving him into a tie for 10th all-time in program history in career wins with Scott Wiggen (1982-87). The ACC runner-up at 197 pounds, Stemmet became just the 11th wrestler in school history to eclipse the 100-career win plateau.
The Scholar-Athlete Award went to Abas, who qualified for his fifth NCAA Championships in 2025. The sixth year was a 2021 NCAA All-American and finished his career with a 96-42 overall record. Last season, he earned College Sports Communicators First Team Academic All-America honors, becoming just the fourth wrestler in school history to be both an NCAA All-American and a CSC Academic All-American during their careers.
Miranda took home the team’s Most Improved Award. The fifth year turned in the best season of his career, going 22-9 overall and qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the first time. He won the Roadrunner Open, placed third at the ACC Championships and fourth at the Midlands Championships, finishing with a career mark of 67-43.
Ming and Parco were recognized with Tod Surmon Awards for their outstanding performances in a dual. Ming, a fifth year who qualified for his first NCAA Championships in 2025, twice registered major decisions to secure dual wins for the Cardinal – at Oregon State (Jan. 31) and at Princeton (Feb. 13). Parco’s late-match heroics gave Stanford its first win over Arizona State (Jan. 19) since 2019.
Both Cholakyan and Norman were presented with the Iron Man Wrestler Award. Norman, who was ranked in the top 10 for much of the season, was 21-6 overall and 9-1 in duals at 174 pounds. A true freshman, Cholakyan was 15-11 overall and 8-3 in duals while leading the Cardinal with five pins.
The Chris Horpel 11th Man Coaches Award, given to the individual that made significant contributions to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement or special leadership, was presented to true freshman Jack Consiglio.
Stanford wrestlers continued to excel in the classroom this year. Eight Cardinal were named NWCA Scholar All-Americans – Abas, Cholakyan, Garvin, Knox, Ming, Miranda, Norman and Stemmet. Stanford had nine wrestlers earn All-ACC Academic Team honors – Abas, Cholakyan, Garvin, Knox, Ming, Miranda, Tye Monteiro, Norman and Stemmet.
