Aikey, Kohler Manage Braces in Shutout

Jasmine Aikey and Charlotte Kohler each scored a pair of goals

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Jasmine Aikey and sophomore Charlotte Kohler each managed a brace as No. 1 Stanford shut out Arizona 6-0 on Thursday night from Cagan Stadium.

The Wildcats (3-1-0) had not allowed a goal prior to Thursday’s clash, but Stanford’s (5-0-0) six tallies pushed its season total to 25 goals through five matches.

Aikey got the scoring started in the seventh minute as she gained control on a mistouch from Arizona, dribbled toward the top of the box and unleashed a bending shot to the far post for the goal.

Kohler made it 2-0 in the 13th minute as she received a perfect through ball from Allie Montoya, evaded a defender and slotted her shot past Arizona goalkeeper Olivia Ramey.

Junior Shae Harvey notched her first goal of the season four minutes later, settling an attempted clearance from Arizona’s back line in the 17th minute, lining up her left-footed shot from 25 yards out and tucking it just under the bar at the far post.

Kohler locked up her first career multi-goal match in the 58th minute, slipping into the box and receiving a pass from Andrea Kitahata before cutting the ball to her left and lacing her left-footed shot into the back of the net. The two goals ran Kohler’s season total to four.

Following suit less than two minutes later, Aikey headed home her second goal of the night off a perfect cross from Joelle Jung on the wing. The native of Palo Alto, Calif. now has five goals on the season and 27 in her career.

Putting the finishing touches on the rout, Elise Evans scored her second goal of the season in the 71st minute. With the Wildcats desperately attempting to clear their lines following a Stanford corner kick, Jung headed a ball into the box and Evans timed a bounce perfectly before volleying a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper. The play was originally ruled offside, but upon VAR, the call was overturned to a goal.

All three Stanford goalkeepers earned minutes on Thursday night, with freshman Caroline Birkel working the first half and making one save. Sophomore Kaiya Jota played just over 25 minutes to start the second half before junior Alyssa Savig finished off the combined shutout.

Stanford will now prepare to hit the road for the first time this year next week when it travels to No. 4 USC on Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
