Cardinal tops women's ACC final, takes second at two other regattas

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Cardinal repeated as Women's ACC champs this weekend, winning the 18-team regatta hosted by MIT. Stanford also took second at the Captain Hurst Bowl and Savin Hill Invite, rounding out the weekend with a fourth-place finish at the Nevins Trophy.

The Card won the ACC with 136 points – Vanessa Lahrkamp skippered the A boat, with Piper Blackband (1-8, 11-14) and Alexandra Jones (9-10) each joining for stretches. The boat took first in the division with 69 points, including a pai of first-place finishes.

The B boat featured Ellie Harned and Samara Walshe splitting skipper duties, and Kit Harned at crew. The boat finished first four times, coming in second in the division with 67 points.

“It’s a big win, against a field very similar to what we will see at the national championship, at a difficult venue very different than what we practice at home," said head coach Chris Klevan. "It is not easy for our team to start late in the season, relative to other schools, but then travel the way we do to try to catch up to the rest of the country. Yet, we do it with a grace and a toughness that, I think says a lot about our team culture. The victory in Boston last weekend showcased our teamwork, focus and mental toughness.”

At the Savin Hill Invite, the Card took second with 56 points. The A boat of Griggs Diemar and Avery Baldwin took third in the division with 35 points, finishing first and taking third twice.

The B team of Thomas Whidden and Amiya Stroumza took first in the B division, ending with 21 points. The boat finished in the top five of all eight races, winning once and placing in the top three six times.

Stanford took second as well at the Captain Hurst Bowl, finishing with 62 points in the 14-team regatta. The A boat of Thomas Sitzmann and Alice Schmid finished second in the division with 27 points, winning one of seven races in finishing in the top three four times.

The B boat of Reade Decker and Abby Baird finished third in the B division with 35 points, taking three top-three finishes.

Rounding out the weekend, the Cardinal took fourth at the 17-team Nevins Trophy. The A boat of Lucas Woodworth and Kate Myles took 12th, while the B boat of Freddie Parkin and Caroline Geiger took first in their division.

Next weekend the Card is back in action at the Open ACC Finals, Yale Women's Invitational and the Oberg Trophy.
