Stanford Men's Soccer Downs Wake Forest 2-0

A pair of second-half scores from seniors Fletcher Bank and Zach Bohane powered No. 3 Stanford to a 2-0 road win at Wake Forest on Saturday night.

The win, the team’s fourth straight, also propelled the Cardinal (10-1-1, 4-1-0) to the top of the ACC table on 12 points. Stanford moved to 6-0 all-time against the Demon Deacons with the victory.

A dominant performance from end-to-end, it was only a matter of time before Stanford broke through. The Cardinal outshot Wake Forest 21-10, put eight on frame to the Deacons’ two, and was immensely threatening on a night when it only had two corners to Wake’s eight.

“Tonight was a fantastic performance in a really exciting game of soccer,” said Knowles Family Director of Men’s Soccer Jeremy Gunn. “I was really impressed with how sharp our team was from start to finish, and when you weigh the chances and the way we played, I felt the team were very deserving of the victory tonight.”

Twenty Straight At Maples

Dating back to last season, No. 4 Stanford extended its home winning streak to 20, sweeping Notre Dame, 25-22, 26-24, 25-14, Friday, at Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal’s 20 straight wins at Maples is the third-longest active home winning streak in the nation. Stanford has dropped just four sets during the streak.

Outside hitter Elia Rubin and Julia Blyashov, and middle blocker Erika Sayer all tallied 12 kills to lead the Cardinal. Twenty-one of Stanford’s 26 points in the second set came on kills, hitting .364 as a team in the frame.

Stanford (12-2, 3-0 ACC), hit .291 as a team, racking up 50 kills, 40 digs and six aces. Notre Dame (4-7, 1-2 ACC) hit .250, totaling 31 kills, 33 digs and 13.0 blocks.

Strong Start To The Season

Beginning the season at the PAC Invite, hosted by the University of the Pacific, No. Stanford men’s swimming opened the season in a strong way. Competing in both the morning and afternoon sessions, the Cardinal scored nine heat wins to leave Friday with a commanding lead.

Stanford next returns to the pool for a tri-meet with California and Arizona State on Oct. 24 and 25. The Oct. 24 date is at home while the Oct. 25 portion takes place in Berkeley. Stanford hosts the Friday session beginning at 2:00 pm.
