BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 1 Stanford stormed past No. 6 Long Beach State for a 23-11 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Brigitte Donner Daws Memorial Invitational.
After a tight first quarter, Stanford (2-0, 0-0 MPSF) took control with a seven-goal outburst in the second period and never looked back.
Jenna Flynn matched a career high with six goals on eight attempts while Juliette Dhalluin added three goals and five assists for the Cardinal, which received at least one goal from 12 different players.
Kamryn Barone, Serena Browne, Sienna Green and Natalia Szczerba also produced multi-goal efforts for Stanford, which reached the 20-goal mark for the second straight game.
Trailing 3-1 in the first period, Flynn scored twice to even the match before Ella Woodhead’s 6-on-5 score with two seconds before the buzzer gave Stanford a 6-5 edge. The Cardinal finished 5-of-7 on the power play.
The Cardinal scored five unanswered goals to open the second period, extending its lead to 11-5 with 4:06 on the clock.
Leading 13-7 at intermission, Flynn opened the scoring in the third quarter, matching her career high with a sixth goal to make it 14-7 with 5:38 remaining.
Claire Minton’s goal with 4:44 left to play resulted in Stanford again reaching the 20-goal plateau.
Christine Carpenter finished with three saves through the first three quarters before Jackie King came up with five stops in the fourth.
Stanford will play a pair of exhibition matches at the tournament this weekend, facing No. 3 UCLA today at 2 p.m. and No. 4 California on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
The Cardinal’s next official match is Saturday, Feb. 7, at UC Davis at 12 p.m.
