DALLAS – Opening the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in winning fashion, No. 4 Stanford men’s tennis survived a late charge from No. 22 Arizona State, defeating its former conference rivals, 4-3, at the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex on SMU’s campus. Stanford improves to 7-1 this season with the win, notching its third ranked win of the campaign in the process.
The Cardinal took an early lead in doubles, making swift work on courts one and three. The nationally-ranked duo of Alex Chang and Alex Razeghi scored a 6-1 victory on court one, while the pair of Nico Godsick and Jagger Leach netted the clincher on court three, 6-2.
Extending its advantage to 2-0, Alex Chang earned his team-leading 11th victory of the season with a straight-sets win on court three, 6-4, 6-3. Arizona State pulled a point back on court one, but Hudson Rivera restored the two-point lead with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 victory in the second position. Rivera improves to 4-0 this season in dual matches.
Arizona State battled back to tie the match, 3-3, but Razeghi scored the clinching point on court five, coming from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The sophomore improves to 5-0 in duals this season while scoring his second clinching point this season and sixth of his career.
Stanford advances to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season, and the fourth time in its last seven appearances dating back to 2018.
The Cardinal will face either No. 2 Ohio State or SMU on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. in the quarterfinals.
