CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 12 Stanford men’s tennis was dealt its first setback of the ACC calendar, falling at North Carolina, 4-2. Stanford drops to 7-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
The defending ACC tournament champions fell behind early, as North Carolina struck first in doubles, earning victories on courts one and two.
Needing four matches in singles to clinch the match, Stanford won three first sets on courts four, five and six. After the Tar Heels went up 2-0, Nico Godsick pulled a point back on court six with a 6-2, 7-5 victory. North Carolina again scored a victory to make it 3-1, but Alex Razeghi pulled a second point back on court five, winning in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.
Despite Alex Chang holding a lead on court four, the Tar Heels picked up the clinching point in a third set tiebreaker on court two, 7-3.
Stanford falls to 3-1 all-time against North Carolina, and 1-1 as members of the ACC.
Stanford returns to action on Sunday, March 1 at Duke. The first serves are set for 9 a.m. PT.
