ATLANTA - No. 2 Stanford women’s swimming & diving kicked off the NCAA Championships by securing two All-America relays and a new program record on Wednesday evening.
Competition began in the morning session with the 1650 free, where Bailey O’Regan got the week started for the Cardinal with her first career appearance at the NCAA meet. The sophomore out of Sarasota, Fla., finished two seconds off her lifetime-best with a 16:14.42, good for 4th in the second heat and 23rd overall in the event.
Action continued into the evening with the 200 medley relay, where the quartet of Torri Huske, Lucy Thomas, Gigi Johnson, and Annam Olasewere finished tied for second with a program-record 1:32.35. Huske led off with a 22.98 split in her first backstroke leg of the season, while Thomas (25.88), Johnson (22.14), and Olasewere (21.35) finished off a dead heat to the finish with Louisville for the program’s second consecutive runner-up finish in the event at the national championships.
The night concluded with the 800 freestyle relay, where Caroline Bricker, Huske, Lucy Bell, and Kayla Wilson posted a season-best swim of 6:50.12 to finish sixth, besting the previous mark set by Bricker, Huske, Johnson, and Wilson at the Texas Invitational earlier this season by over a second.
Stanford sits third in the team standings with 59 points after the opening night of competition, trailing Virginia (100 points) and Texas (89 points).
