DALLAS – No. 47 Stanford closed its regular season with a 4-1 loss at No. 30 SMU on Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinal, 11-9 overall, finished its second ACC campaign with a 7-5 league mark and the No. 9 seed in next week’s ACC Championship in Cary, N.C. Stanford will open Wednesday against the winner of No. 16 seed Louisville and No. 17 seed Virginia Tech. If the Cardinal was to prevail, a third-round match with No. 8 seed SMU would await on Thursday.
All three doubles matches went down to the wire. Sein Myoung and Morgan Shaffer fell 7-5 at No. 3 and Caroline Driscoll and Monika Ekstrand let an early advantage in the tiebreak slip away at No. 1, losing 7-6 (6). Freshmen Alyssa Ahn and Tianmei Wang were winners at No. 2, outlasting Sophie Llewellyn and Ntalia Stasny 7-6 (11).
Stanford’s only point came when Caroline Driscoll’s opponent, Caroline McGinley, was forced to retire early in the second set. Ekstrand, Wang and Myoung were all beaten in straight sets on courts one, four and five.
