CARY, N.C. – Stanford’s run at the ACC Women’s Tennis Championship came to an end in the quarterfinals on Friday, the No. 9 seed Cardinal falling to top-seeded Virginia 4-1.
The Cavaliers won at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to take an early lead and then picked up another quick point when Emma Sun, laboring with an injury and serving underhand, was forced to retire before the start of the second set on court six singles.
Monika Ekstrand snapped a three-match skid and picked up a ranked win on the top court, beating No. 61 Vivian Yang 6-1, 6-4. Caroline Driscoll on court three and Tianmei Wang on court four were in third sets, but Virginia ended it with straight-set victories on courts two and five.
Stanford, which picked up resume wins over No. 23 Cal and No. 25 SMU in the past two weeks, will learn its draw for the NCAA team tournament on Monday, April 27.
