REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The Stanford men’s rowing program earned a sweep of its six races at the California Classic on Saturday.
In a matchup against No. 21 Oregon State in the morning, No. 9 Stanford cruised down the 2,000-meter Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon course, winning the 1V8 by 19 seconds, the 2V8 by 26 seconds and the 3V8 by 17 seconds.
Stanford, with Elliott Donovan-Davies and Tom Corbett as the stern pair in the 1V8, finished in 5:41.1 to the Beavers’ 6:00.3 on a pristine morning on the Peninsula. The Cardinal 2V8, with Danny Stephenson at stroke, achieved a 5:44.3 to Oregon State’s 6:10.3. The 3V8, coxed by Ginger Bernstein and with Maxim Ericson at stroke, won with a time of 5:54.5.
Stanford raced in the afternoon against No. 15 Wisconsin and won the 1V8, 2V8 and 3V8 races by 12 seconds each.
The California Classic also included Cal, Santa Clara, Temple and UC San Diego. Though Stanford is done for the weekend, the regatta continues Sunday from 9-9:50 a.m.
The Cardinal 1V8 and 2V8 boats each are 5-2 this season and the 3V8 is 3-2. Next for Stanford are matchups against No. 5 Princeton, No. 10 Yale, No. 11 Penn and No. 17 Columbia on April 11 in Princeton, N.J.
