Men’s Tennis Upsets Texas A&M to Reach Super Regionals

No. 18 Stanford downed No. 10 Texas A&M to reach the NCAA round of 16

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Keeping its season alive with a top-10 victory on the road, No. 18 Stanford men’s tennis defeated 11th-seeded No. 10 Texas A&M, 4-2, in the second round of the NCAA Championship to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Cardinal improves to 19-8 on the season.

Stanford advances to its fifth consecutive NCAA Super Regional, four of which have come with regional wins on the road. Texas A&M joins Harvard (2022), Columbia (2023) and Oklahoma (2024) in dropping home regionals as a seeded team to the Cardinal over the past five seasons – no other program in college tennis has more than one road regional win over the five-year stretch.

For the second straight battle to open the NCAA Championship Stanford had to come from behind after dropping the doubles point. Samir Banerjee and Jagger Leach fought to a 7-5 victory on court three, but Stanford was outlasted in the top two positions to give Texas A&M an early lead.

The momentum shifted Stanford’s way in singles, with the Cardinal obtaining four first sets. Banerjee finished off an unblemished weekend in singles with a clinical 6-1, 6-1 victory on court two, his third victory in a row. Hudson Rivera gave Stanford its first lead in the match at 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on court four, giving the junior his 15th singles win of the season. Texas A&M responded with a win on court five to tie the match at 2-2.

After winning a 9-7 tiebreaker in his first set, Nico Godsick earned a 6-3 second set victory to give Stanford an advantage it would not relinquish, with Godsick tallying his 12th win of the season.

Alex Razeghi provided Stanford the clinching point, his sixth of the season, with his 21st victory of the season, 6-4, 7-5. Razeghi improved to 4-0 at No. 1 singles and 5-0 against ranked opponents, while the result was the highest-ranked win of his career.

Stanford improves to 6-1 all-time against Texas A&M and 123-29 all-time in the NCAA Championship.

The Cardinal will travel to sixth-seeded No. 2 TCU on Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m. PT.
