Three Cardinal Qualify for NCAA Championships

Alyssa Jones, Mena Scatchard, and Juliette Whittaker will compete at Hayward Field in two weeks

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Stanford track & field concluded four days of competition at the NCAA West First Round on Saturday evening, with three Cardinal securing bids to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

The marquee moment of the weekend came from Alyssa Jones, who posted a 2026 world-leading mark of 7.09 meters on her first attempt to capture the long jump title. Surpassing seven meters for the first time in her career, the effort shattered her own program record and moved her to No. 2 on the NCAA all-time list, trailing only Tara Davis-Woodhall's collegiate record of 7.14m set in 2021.

The Homestead, Fla., native continued her success later in the meet with an outdoor season-best clearance of 1.87m in the high jump, qualifying for her second event at Hayward Field in two weeks.

Mena Scatchard secured her first NCAA Championships berth in her Stanford career with a sixth-place finish in the 1500 meters, making a slight improvement on her No. 2 mark in program history with a time of 4:09.17. Scatchard was joined in the quarterfinals by teammate Hillary Studdert, who ultimately finished 16th overall with a personal-best 4:16.04.

Juliette Whittaker won both her races on the weekend with identical season-best times of 2:00.65 in the 800 meters, cruising to her third career outdoor NCAA Championships berth. She'll head to Eugene in search of yet another 800m national title, previously sweeping the indoor and outdoor crowns in 2024. Amelia Everett also qualified for the quarterfinal round, finishing 22nd overall at 2:08.37.

Tess Stapleton impressed with a race-winning time of 56.19 in the preliminary heat of the 400-meter hurdles, but was unfortunately forced to withdraw from competition before the quarterfinals, bringing her season to an early end.

On the men's side, Leo Young missed out on the NCAA Championships despite a pair of solid efforts in the distance efforts. Young posted the 10th-fastest 1500m time of 3:39.38, narrowly missing the cut in the second quarterfinal heat. Young returned later in the 5000 meters, finishing 24th overall at 14:06.79.

The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place on June 11-14 at Hayward Field, where Jones, Scatchard, and Whittaker will compete for national honors in the final event of the 2026 campaign.
