Season Continues in Terra Haute

STANFORD, Calif. — Following a strong outing in its first race of the season, Stanford cross country heads back out on the course this weekend as the Cardinal treks to Indiana State to take part in the John McNichols Invitational on Saturday, September 19. 

The Cardinal men begin the morning in the eight-kilometer (4.97 mile) championship race at 6:05 a.m. PT while the Cardinal women race in the six-kilometer (3.73 mile) open championship at 6:40 a.m. at Indiana State’s LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course which serves as this season’s NCAA DI Cross Country Championship course.

The Cardinal is back in action following a successful season-opening race at the 32nd USF Invite in San Francisco. On the women’s side, Julia Flynn earned her first collegiate win - and second-straight podium placement - at Hellman Hollow, marking the 11th time in 12 appearances the Cardinal has produced an individual or team champion. The Stanford women placed two in the top five in a sixth-place finish overall. On the men’s side, Stanford finished in pack-like fashion in a tempo run, grabbing fifth place overall. 

Stanford boasts 10 entries for the women’s championship race including the season debut for Amy Bunnage, Chiara Dailey, Sophia Kennedy, Irene Riggs, Hillary Studdert, Hanne Thomsen and Jaelyn Williams. Amaya Bharadwaj, Maya de Brouwer and Julia Flynn will also run for Stanford after solid statements at the USF Invite. 

On the men’s side, Stanford enters 15 harriers who are looking to make an impact including Leo Young and Lex Young who headline a list of seven Cardinal making their season debut. 

CARDINAL AT THE JMI

Stanford returns to Terra Haute, Ind., for the first time since twice racing at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course opening during the 2019 campaign. Stanford opened the 2019 season with a pair of second-place finishes on both the men’s and women’s teams. The Stanford men and women both claimed second overall while grabbing second-place finishes individually on both teams. In total, Stanford placed five harriers in the top 10 while beating a pair of top-five teams to open a successful 2019 campaign. 

THE FIELD

Stanford joins a list of 34 participating teams on the men’s side with No. 6 Northern Arizona leading the field. The No. 27 Cardinal competes against 11 other ranked competitors in one of the deepest fields to start the 2026 campaign. 

On the women’s side, No. 9 Stanford competes in the open championship against two other top-15 ranked teams including No. 7 West Virginia and No. 11 Northwestern.
