Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team is in second place after the first day of the U.S. Intercollegiate Tournament at the Stanford Golf Course. Southern California is in first place with a 565 total, edging the Cardinal's first day sum of 572. The field is led by Stanford senior Philip Rowe who goes into the final round with a two-stroke lead over the Trojans' Kevin Stadler.
Stanford shot a 288 in the first round and then tallied a 284 to capture second place with one round of competition to go. Southern California opened the day with a 278, but then notched a 287 in the second half. The Trojans own a seven-stroke lead over the Cardinal and a 13-stroke lead over third place UCLA and Oregon.
Rowe leads the pack after posting a 64 in the opening round this morning. He followed up the 7-under score with a 72 to remain in the lead with a first-day 136, edging Stadler's 138.
Sophomore Blake Mastalir posted a 141 with a 73 and a 68 to share fourth place and junior Ron Won put up a 145 to tie for 19th. Junior Jim Seki and freshman Kevin Blue are tied for 62nd with a 152.
Four Cardinal golfers competed as individuals with Pat Phillips notching a 147 (t-30th), Del de Windt chalking up a 148 (t-36th), George Downing posting a 150 (t-53rd) and Brian Sinay recording a 159 (t-84th).
The third and final round of the U.S. Intercollegiate will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday morning. The Cardinal will next compete at the Pac-10 Championships in Corvallis, Ore. on April 25-27.
