May 24, 2002

Stanford, Calif. - With their departure date of Monday, May 27 fast approaching, the Stanford Women's Sailing Team is training hard on the waters ofRedwood City Turning Basin this week. In preparation for thisyear's North American Championship (to be held in Keehi Lagoon, homewaters of U Hawaii) top-ranked teams from Brown University, Hobart/WmSmith Colleges and St. Mary's College of Maryland have arrived tospar against the Cardinal Women.

2002 All-PCYRA A-Division skipper Jennifer Porter '04 hasbeen working with three crews, each specializing in a different windcondition; Jessica Gray '04 is Porter's light-air crew, and hashelped Porter to victories at Yale Women's and the Fall and SpringPCC's. Sarah Zukerman '03, returning from a semester abroad, hassparked new life into the Cardinal Women, has helped Porter masterthe mid-range of 10-15 knots of breeze. Zuk helped Porter dominatethe Spring PCC's. Liz Shearer '04 transferred from UW this year andhas segued nicely into both crew and skipper positions. Mostrecently, the Porter/Shearer duo won numerous races at the windyDellenbaugh invite at Brown University last month. We expect Liz tohelp Porter dominate in the windiest conditions the team might see inHawaii.

Also voted All-PCYRA this year, B-Division skipper AshleyFrush '04 has matured tremendously as a competitor over the pastyear. Crewing for Frush in light winds will be Jenais Zarlin, whohas helped Frush dominate at regattas like the Navy SpringIntersectional. 2002 All-PCYRA crew Kara Sweeney '03 will sub in forZarlin when the winds strengthen to the traditional Hawaiian trades.Sweeney is a force to be reckoned with on the Women's team, and hassailed with Frush to victory in the Spring PCC's, winning B-Divisionby 20 points.

Gray, Zukerman and Sweeney will all be spending 2 full weeksin Hawaii. They will sail with both the women for Women's NorthAmericans (May 29-31) and the men in the Coed NA's (June 5-7).Intercollegiate Sailing Association All-American crew and skipperhonors will be announced at the conclusion of the Co-ed NA's on June7.
