This Week ...
Third-ranked Stanford (14-2, 6-1 MPSF) will travel to Berkeley on Saturday to take on cross-bay rival and fifth-ranked California (12-6, 5-3 MPSF). The Big Splash will start at noon at the Spieker Aquatics Center. The Golden Bears are led by sophomore Jodie Needles, who has collected 28 goals this season. The Cardinal will return to The Farm to host No. 7 Hawai'i on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine will close out their road trip with Stanford, after facing off against Santa Clara on Friday and San Jose State on Saturday. Hawai'i is led by Senior Karin van Hoff and junior Chelsea Garner-Prohs who have a combined 207 career goals.
On Television...
The Big Splash will be televised via tape delay at 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 on the brand new College Sports Television network (channel 610 - DirecTV). CSTV is the first network devoted solely to collegiate athletics and airs 24 hours a day. Christ Dorst, a former Stanford All-American water polo player, and Courtney Johnson, a former Cal All-American, will be calling the action. CSTV will also air the MPSF Women's Water Polo Championship and Semifinal matches later this month.
Last Week ...
The Cardinal went 1-1 last weekend, dropping its first MPSF match to Long Beach State in an 8-7 final. The Cardinal defeated UC Irvine 11-3 on Friday on the strength of four goals by junior Lauren Faust. On Saturday, the Beach went 3-for-3 on penalty shots and earned two 6-on-4 opportunities as they beat Stanford for the first time in school history.
Leading the Pack ...
Junior Brenda Villa is leading the offensive attack with 30 goals this season. On the other side of the pool, senior Jackie Frank is averaging 8.0 saves per game and has allowed only 50 goals in her 15 games. Every offensive player on the squad has scored at least one goal in 2003, as the Cardinal is outscoring opponents 145-59.
