High School: A 2003 graduate of Menlo-Atherton High School • Earned 2001 First Team All-Peninsula Athletic League honors • Batted .397 during his prep career • Captain of his baseball team during his senior year • Led his squad to the 2002 PAL Ocean Division crown and two CIF Central Coast Section postseason appearances (2002, '03) • Also played forward on the basketball team for two seasons • Named a California Governor's Scholar for three years and also an AP Scholar with distinction • Coached in baseball by Donny Kadokawa.
Other Amateur Baseball: Did not play summer baseball in 2004 after having knee surgery following last season • Played three summers with fellow sophomore Ryan Seawell on the Menlo Park Brewers in the Joe DiMaggio League (2001, '02, '03) • Hit .385 during his three-season stint with the Brewers.
