Steve Danielson

Steve Danielson wrapped his 10th season as an assistant coach in 2019, serving as the program's Technical Director.

One of the most accomplished USA Men's National Team players in the history of the sport, Danielson was inducted into the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018. Danielson enjoyed a successful international playing career that spanned 21 years combined in both outdoor and indoor field hockey. In addition to making solid contributions both offensively and defensively from 1989-2011 as a member of the U.S. National Team, Danielson's international outdoor playing career included representing Team USA at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.

Prior to competing in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Danielson started his international career competing in the 1989 Junior World Cup, after which he competed in three Olympic qualifying events including winning a bronze medal in the 1995 Pan American Games. Danielson also competed in the 1999 Pan American Games.

In February 2011, Danielson and fellow assistant coach Patrick Cota competed for the U.S. National Indoor squad in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Indoor World Cup in Ponzan, Poland. Danielson was also a member of the U.S. National Indoor Team that competed at the 2003 Indoor World Cup. Danielson played two seasons at Club UTS in Australia (1999, 2001) and also played for Menzieshill in Scotland (2002-03).

Danielson represented the United States as an athlete and coach at the 2017 IMHA Masters Indoor World Cup in Krefeld, Germany, and was recently selected to the U.S. O-40 Men’s Masters Team that will compete at the World Masters Hockey (WMH) Indoor World Cup from February 14-17, 2019 in Hong Kong.

Along with his distinguished playing career and time spent coaching at Stanford, Danielson has also helped lead a variety of national programs. Danielson, who began serving as a USA Field Hockey Level 2 Coach Educator in 2018, has also actively served as the West Coast Region Men's High Performance Coaching Director and Consultant to the U.S. Men's National Team since 2017. In 2015, Danielson spent time on the coaching staff of with the Indoor National team touring Europe. In 2014, Danielson coached a squad at the Women's National Championship in Lancaster, Pa.

Most notably, Danielson served as an assistant coach for the U.S. U21 National Team, which finished fourth in the U21 Pan American Games.

In 2013, Danielson served as the Women's National Championship Coach, West Region. He also was the assistant coach and manager for the USA Men's National Team at the World League Round 2 competition in Rio, Brazil.

Danielson earned Level III coaching accreditation and a Women's National Championship (Olympic Team Selection) Coach, West Region, in 2012. During the same year, he was the World League Round 1 Assistant Coach and Manager of the USA Men's National Team in San Diego, Calif. He served as the USA Under-17 Men's National Team Assistant Coach during a series against the Canadian Under-17 Men's National Team.

Danielson has served as the Women's High Performance Olympic Development Coach, West Region, since 2009. He has been the Director of Men's High Performance Olympic Development, Northern California Region, since 2011.

Danielson came to Stanford after serving as the Athletic Director of Quest Athletic Center in Del Mar, Calif., since 2008. Danielson has been part of the Rush Field Hockey program since 2001. An accredited USA Field Hockey coach, Danielson has been working with the California High Performance training center for both the Men's and Women's competitions since 2007 and 2008, respectively.

The husband of Tara Danielson and a native of Livermore, Calif., Danielson earned a B.S. in exercise physiology from San Diego State in 1999.
