Maddie Sheils joined the staff as an assistant coach at Stanford in 2019 after a six-year career in professional golf. The 2021-22 season was her third on The Farm.

Sheils helped Stanford to the 2022 national championship, its second in program history. For the second straight season, a Cardinal freshman won the NCAA individual national championship, when Rose Zhang did so en route to an NCAA record 69.68 scoring average. Zhang was named the ANNIKA Award winner, WGCA Golfer and Freshman of the Year, Honda Sport Award winner for Golf, Pac-12 Golfer and Freshman of the Year, a first team All-American and All-Pac-12.

In addition to Zhang, senior Aline Krauter and junior Brooke Seay were named second team All-Americans, while Rachel Heck earned third team honors. All four golfers were named to the All-Pac-12 team.

Seay set Stanford’s new junior scoring average record in 2021-22 at 71.64, while Krauter’s 72.29 scoring average was the second-best by a Stanford senior in program history. Krauter was also named the recipient of the Dinah Shore Award Trophy, while Seay earned the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award.

The Cardinal was the unanimous No. 1 team in the country from start to finish, defeating No. 8 Georgia, No. 5 Auburn and No. 2 Oregon in match play to claim the national title.

Perhaps the highlight of the year came in Stanford’s win at the Gunrock Invitational (Del Paso Country Club), when the Cardinal set a new NCAA 54-hole record with a team score of 50-under, while Heck broke her own school record to win the event at 18-under (198).

Sheils helped a young Cardinal sqaud win six of its nine stroke-play events entered in 2021, including a pair of dominating NCAA postseason performances. Stanford finished second in two others and fifth in their other non-win. Stanford rolled to a 30-shot victory in the NCAA Regionals on its home course followed by a 13-shot margin after four rounds of stroke play at the NCAA Championship to claim the No. 1 seed for match play. Stanford fired seven rounds of 10-under or better on the season, setting new 18- (-13, Stanford Regional), 36- (-25, Stanford Regional) and 54-hole (-28, Stanford Regional) school records.

Freshman Rachel Heck became Stanford's first individual national champion and was named the ANNIKA Award winner, Ping/WGCA Golfer and Freshman of the Year, and Pac-12 Golfer and Newcomer of the Year. Heck won six times in nine starts, becoming the third woman ever to sweep the postseason (conference, regionals, nationals) and set a new NCAA record with a 69.72 scoring average. Heck's 16-under 200 to win the Fresno State Classic marked a new school record for 54-hole score.

Both Heck and sophomore Angelina Ye earned WGCA First Team All-America honors, making Stanford the only school in the country with two First Team selections.

In her first season, Sheils helped freshman Angelina Ye and sophomore Aline Krauter to All-America honors. Ye earned first-team honors from Golfweek and second-team recognition fromthe WGCA, while Krauter was on both publications' second team. The Cardinal earned a full-field victory at The Molly Intercollegiate to begin the season before a second-place finish at the Stanford Intercollegiate. Ye was victorious at the Stanford Intercollegiate, while senior Andrea Lee won at The Molly before she and Albane Valenzuela turned pro in November.
