The win was Stanford?s second in a row over San Jose State, and the Cardinal now leads the all-time series 44-13-1. The win was the Cardinal?s first over the Spartans at Stanford Stadium since a 28-12 victory in 1997.Stanford has now won two straight home openers, and three of its last four. In addition, the game was the Stanford Stadium debut for head coach Buddy Teevens. With the win, eight of the last nine Stanford head coaches have won their home debuts.The 63 points was Stanford?s most since a 63-9 win at Oregon State on November 7, 1981. The point total was Stanford?s highest at home since a 67-14 win over Army on October 4, 1975.Stanford and San Jose State combined for 89 points on Saturday night, marking the 12th time in the last 14 meetings that the teams have combined for 50 or more points. Stanford?s 63 points marked the 16th time it has scored 40 or more points against the Spartans. The Cardinal?s highest point total against San Jose State came in a 68-20 home win in 1968.Two Stanford players scored their first career touchdown on Saturday --- J.R. Lemon on a four-yard run in the first quarter and Alex Smith on a 10-yard reception from Chris Lewis in the second quarter.In just his second collegiate game, redshirt freshman running back J.R. Lemon rushed for three touchdowns. The three rushing touchdowns is the most by a Cardinal since Kerry Carter had four at Oregon on October 20, 2001.Stanford redshirt sophomore wide receiver Teyo Johnson --- who is on the "Watch List" for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation?s top wide receiver --- recorded his second 100-yard receiving game in as many tries this season. Johnson had seven catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns after catching four passes for 117 yards and a score last week at Boston College.Stanford defensive tackle Matt Leonard recorded two interceptions on Saturday night, with both of them coming in the first half. The senior entered the game with one career interception.The 28 first half points was Stanford?s most since it scored 28 in a 38-28 upset win over fourth-ranked UCLA on October 27, 2001 at Stanford Stadium.The 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by the San Jose State?s Charles Pauley in the first quarter was the first by a Spartan since Deonce Whitaker ran back a kick 89 yards vs. Saint Mary?s on September 18, 1999. It was also the first kickoff return for a touchdown against Stanford since Oregon?s Onterrio Smith went 96 yards on October 20, 2001.Tonight?s attendance of 54,500 is the largest in the Stanford-San Jose State series since the two teams drew 56,423 in 1992. It is also Stanford?s largest home opener since 1988 when the Cardinal drew 57,000 vs. USC.
