STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore fullback Kris Bonifas (Pebble Beach, CA) scored two touchdowns, and senior Chris Lewis (Long Beach, CA) and freshman Trent Edwards (Los Gatos, CA) threw for a score apiece, in the Cardinal and White Spring Game on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Stadium.
The game matched the offense (Cardinal) against defense (White), though no team score was kept. The offense ran a total of 18 drives from various parts of the field, including two in the "two minute drill" format. The game also included special teams work.
"Today wasn't a scrimmage, but more of a practice opportunity for us." Stanford head coach Buddy Teevens said. "We got some good work in today. It was a very productive day, especially for our offensive line, in terms of getting people game experience. The first 30 minutes was not as clean as I would have liked, but in the second half we improved. We made significant progress over the course of the spring. I'm pleased with the team's effort and commitment, and I'm eager to get back on the field in August."
There was a total of five touchdowns scored in the contest --- four by the offense and one by the defense.
The defense scored the first touchdown of the afternoon on a 49-yard interception return by sophomore Nick Silvas (Phoenix, AZ).
The Cardinal offense scored two touchdowns on the ground and two through the air. Freshman Gerald Commissiong (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) scored on a five-yard run and Bonifas ran it in from one yard out. Edwards threw a 23-yard scoring pass to Bonifas, while Lewis concluded the scoring with an eight-yard touchdown pass to junior Brandon Royster (Fairfax, VA).
The Cardinal defense was impressive all afternoon long, as it recorded four quarterback sacks, three interceptions, a fumble recovery and six pass breakups.
Sophomore linebacker Capp Culver (Canadian, TX) led the defense with six tackles and an interception, while sophomore Timi Wusu (Palo Alto, CA) added five tackles and sophomore Babatunde Oshinowo Jr. (Naperville, IL) contributed two quarterback sacks.
"I thought we played well up front defensively," Teevens said. "Our defensive ends put a lot of pressure on the quarterback, and created several sacks. It was a good overall performance by the defense."
Offensively, senior wide receiver Luke Powell (Smyrna, TN) was the statistical standout with eight receptions for 76 yards. Freshman David Lofton (Plano, TX), who moved from quarterback to wide receiver in the spring, had three catches for 42 yards.
"It was nice to get the ball in Luke's hands today," Teevens said. "We need to get the ball in Luke's hands as much as possible this season."
At quarterback, Edwards led the way by going 12-of-19 for 122 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, while Lewis was 7-of-14 for 75 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
"We need to be more consistent at the quarterback position," Teevens said. "We need to be more patient, and create more big play opportunities. We threw too many interceptions today (three)."
In the backfield, Commissiong led all rushers with eight carries for 38 yards and sophomore J.R. Lemon (Fayetteville, GA) had seven carries for 36 yards.
