STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Haylee Donaghe was excited to play against No. 6 Stanford for many reasons. After a four-year transition, UC Davis was finally a fully-fledged member of Division I and the Cardinal were the first top-10 team for the Aggies.
Stanford put on a clinic, beating UC Davis 62-41. The Aggies are taking some lessons from the game.
"This was our first chance at this level," Donaghe said. "We came in here with a lot of confidence and we felt like we could hang with them."
Candice Wiggins and Jayne Appel wouldn't let that happen. Wiggins scored 19 points and Appel added 17 and a game-high eight rebounds for the Cardinal (7-1), who won their fifth straight.
"We're going to improve because of them," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "Their zone was effective and we made too many turnovers. But when Jayne got the ball on the block she was extremely effective. I liked our 3-point shooting too. Candice really got it going."
Stanford is off for two weeks for finals, returning to host No. 10 Baylor on Dec. 16.
Paige Minton scored 14 points to lead the Aggies (5-1), who are in their first official season as a Division I team.
Thanks to eight Stanford turnovers in the first 7 minutes, the Aggies were able to stay with the Cardinal, who were playing their second home game after opening on the road. Wiggins hit two consecutive 3-pointers to start the Cardinal offense. Wiggins made half of her 10 3-point tries.
"This was our first look at a zone," Stanford's Jillian Harmon said. "They did a good job trapping the guards."
The Cardinal eventually opened a 62-29 lead with 5:36 before emptying the bench. The Aggies scored the game's final 12 points.
"It's strange," UC Davis coach Sandy Simpson said. "They have an All-American in Candice and the first thing we look at is how to stop Jayne. That's not an easy thing. I've always had a healthy respect for Stanford and that grew exponentially after today."
Donaghe also got a chance to play on the same court as her younger sister, Hannah Donaghe, a freshman at Stanford.
"I got to the gym early to shoot and there was Hannah shooting at the other end," Donaghe said. "Not many people get a chance like that. We had a lot of family and friends here too. At least I scored. She didn't."
Haylee was 3-of-14 from the floor for nine points while Hannah missed her five attempts.
The Cardinal outrebounded UC Davis, 38-25.
Stanford led 32-15 at halftime.
